US Army and VFW Biography
William Snow grew up on military posts with his father, MSG Wayne Snow, who served 20 years in the US Air Force. He and three of his four brothers subsequently enlisted in the military after high school. William Snow completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in 1973 and Advanced Infantry Combat Training at Fort Lewis, Washington. In 1975 he earned his first VFW eligibility by serving with the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea at Camp Casey, Camp Howze, and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) for 13 months. After Korea, he returned to the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis before taking a break in service to earn degrees, including a Ph.D. from the University of Washington.
In 1988 William Snow began serving with the Army Reserve before moving to the California Army National Guard and the 2-159 Mechanized Infantry as Medical Platoon Leader. In 1993 he moved to the 340th Forward Support Battalion, where he served consecutively as Maintenance, Support Operations, Operations and then Executive Officer. In 2000 he transferred to the California National Guard State HQ. From 2001 he served as Director of Support Operations for the 115th Area Support Group. In 2003, he assumed Command of the 980th Quartermaster Battalion and, in 2005, was stationed at the US Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. In 2006 he assumed Command of the 100th Troop Command. In 2008 and 2009, William Snow again earned VFW eligibility by serving with the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) HQ in Prisina, Kosovo. Upon completion of that assignment, he assumed Command of the Army National Guard Medical Detachment until his retirement in 2014.
During his military career, missions took William Snow across the globe from Korea to Ukraine, Italy, Kosovo, Thailand, and Nigeria. Military awards include the NATO Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
William Snow joined the VFW and Tres Pueblos Post 7263 in May 2024. In the fall of 2024, he became Post 7263 and District 12 Chairman of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen Competition. In January 2025, he assumed the duties of District 12 Quartermaster.
William Snow currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Undergraduate Studies at Palo Alto University. He has been happily married since 1978 to his wife Debi, and together they have three children, Shelly, Tarah, and MAJ Jared Snow (California Army National Guard), and seven grandchildren.
